Why swearing will help you hit your next goal
Updated: Feb 1, 2021
Having trouble hitting that new 1-RM or pushing through a tough part of your training session? Try swearing next time!
Recent research studies (in the U.K. & Brooklyn) have shown the benefits of strong language, or making loud noises, in positively affecting how hard you can push to your max.. resulting in an increase in our pain threshold which leads to increased muscle strength & exercise stamina.
Why?
This is primarily because swearing triggers the sympathetic nervous system into fight or flight, boosting adrenaline production. So the next time you’re struggling, try shouting something, anything (worthy note: it’s not the words themselves, but the emotional intensity fueling them) to get that extra kick.
Don’t want to take my word for it? Check it out in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise Journal! 🤬😉💪
